Raeonaire held to the rim of the saddle as she balanced on the rhythm of the gallop. Her countenance further hardened, causing her face to become haggard. Behind her eyes visions of the sun fading beyond an eternally dark horizon haunted her, and a deep, hollow pain struck at her somewhere within her chest. But she shoved it away, dismissing it with a vicious will.

She instead contemplated the week long journey ahead, wondering what other evils she might encounter before she finally returned to the world that she belonged to.

The story is all that matters. All things beautiful, all things forgotten, shall be forged by my hand upon the page. I smile and return to the book. My hand has already chiseled the first and finest note of that beautiful vision, that forgotten story, that greatest of all adventures.

It was near daybreak, (in the sunlit lands, that is, for day is night, and night is the same), when they halted. Elnard leaped off his horse with graceful ease, despite the full suit of armor which he wore.

He held out a hand to Raeonaire, and motioned for her to dismount. "We'll camp here. We could probably both use some rest."

Only slightly insulted by his gesture, Raeonaire fluidly swung herself off the horse, landing lightly on her toes.

"Out of curiousity," she commented, glancing at his armor. "Of what metal is your armor made?"

He removed his helm, and looked at her with an impassive air. "Daemon Rock, in the vulgar tongue," he said. Removing his massive guantlets with ease, he pulled a pin from each of the buckles which were at his shoulders, and with one shrug released himself from the armor.

"The rock was found in the deep valleys of this land, and the style of this armor was invented by an insane though genius dwarf smith many years ago. He built it, as you can see, so that the wearer could both release himself, and arm himself with no more help than his own hands." He removed the black mail shirt which had been hidden by his suit of plate armor, and set it down in a pile.

"I will go and gather sticks for the fire," he said calmly, and walked off into the night with supreme silence, his booted feet making no noise on the gravely soil.

"Charming company," Raeonaire said drily, casting one last glance at the armor. She sat on her heels and dug a small pit in the dirt using her strong, threateningly long nails, though after a few moments it passed through her mind that a firepit was pointless - there was barely anything here.

Besides, she thought with a vicious grin, she would be more than pleased to watch a fire sear across and burn away these wastelands. Maybe then something good would grow.

She finished shortly and stood, flicking the dirt from her fingers with a growing disdain. The frown etched in her features deepened. She surveyed the area, stone-faced, and as her eyes passed over the black steed of the knight, she paused.

If this stallion was, she wondered, anything close to a horse, and not as ill-spirited as the land...she stepped forward, flaring her nostrils and rearing her head, stating her presence. He did not smell like a regular horse - it was a scent that she recognized off of the knight; it was either a scent that had rubbed off, or a quality that they shared.

She frowned, stepping before the steed and appraising him. A vampiric horse? That would be a new one to see. She leaned forward slightly, meeting his eye, and exhaled. She waited for him to reach his head out and accept the greeting.

The stallion nickered, and nodded its head slowly, sidestepping, and meeting the eyes of the woman with its dark black ones. It leaned itself forward, and accepted the greeting with evident pleasure.

Elnard came back at this moment, and raised one dark eyebrow at the two, a large bundle of dry sticks under one arm. "I found some wood," he said, tossing his load near the fire pit.

He eyed his horse, as well as the seeming woman who stood near it. "I see you two have finally met. His name is Ergos." He tilted back his head, and uttered a loud, fierce neigh, which was replied too by his horse. "We have traveled many, many leagues together, and the years have passed us by swiftly."

Raeonaire winced as the shrill neigh of the stallion exploded in her ears, but she chuckled with an unusual warmth. She reached up and scratched beneath Ergos' forelock, then ran her hand along his neck to his withers, and gently rubbed that spot. It was something horses generally enjoyed, but not always.

She let her hand fall back to her side, smiling, and inclined her head to Ergos. Then she stood where she could address both of them, having realized her blunder.

She inclined her head again. "My appologies for not telling my name earlier," she said. "My memory is...not well." The smile that had been slowly fading disappeared, and she paused in thought. I have already given Rathnier that name to call me by, and it is best that I use only one name here... She debated it silently for a moment, then the pressure of time concluded the argument.

"My name is Raeonaire," she said, finally. Then she summoned a quick smile and turned to the fire pit, kneeling and striking a fire with tools she had drawn from her sash.

Ergos shook its combed mane, and sat down by the fire. His master removed a small box filled with lacquer, as well as a brush and a smooth cloth, and began to methodically care for his armor, leaning his back against his horse's side. "We are far from home," Elnard said slowly, his eyes fixed on Raeonaire's face, as if searching for something. "Usually, we live closer to the borders of the sunlit lands, but more recently we've journeyed deep into this dark realm."

Ergos blinked its horse-like eyes, and seemed to whisper something into his master's ear. He nodded his head, and began to rub the newly lacquered helmet with a soft cloth. "What do you usually eat?" he asked the woman, as she busied herself by the fire. "If you eat meat, we can go hunt for some. If not, there are plenty of herbs and vegetation which are wholesome, if not very palatable."

Raeonaire chuckled drily as she leaned back on her heels, watching the embers snap into the darkening sky. "I know not which I trust less," she answered humorously. "I will eat whatever I will to survive."

She felt a yawn rising inside her, and supressed it, though she suddenly realized it had been over thirty hours since she had slept...she blinked, contemplating the conundrum. Was that considered rest, if one passed right through? Even though many called it rest...it might be longer. She had been here maybe thirty hours, but for sleep, could be...forty-five. Depending on the time and distance, it could be immeasurably longer.

Her brow furrowed in consternation as her puzzling wearied her further. She crossed her legs and leaned her elbow against her knee, resting her cheek on her fist, and closed her eyes. She would not be able to sleep just yet, but any rest would be helpful. But then, what of dinner?

Her stomach made a loud and obnoxious comment on the matter, and she sighed, sitting upright. "I do not know what is edible on this plain," she said. "If you point out a plant or creature for me to collect, then I shall do so, and remember it."

Elnard smiled for the first time, not unkindly, though it was not warming either. "Follow me, if you please."

He stood, and stalked off into the plain as silent as a shadow, and paused a few feet away, waiting for his companion to follow.

Raeonaire rose to her feet gracefully, without having to brace her hands against the ground while uncrossing her legs. She followed after Elnard silently, and her pupils widened as she delved into the darkness.
